Do a Little... Save a Lot!
Save Energy at Home
Video
This video shows you some ways to save energy around the house.
As the days get shorter, we spend more time indoors and use more home lighting. Replace those old light bulbs with more energy-efficient ones. Other things to keep in mind: Unplug the TV when you leave the room, turn off the computer when you're done,a nd unplug phone chargers after use.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce the amount of garbage you generate by composting kitchen scraps and yard waste [PDF] in a purchased or homemade bin. Your organic waste will break down into soil that can then be used in your garden! Another composting solution, vermicomposting [PDF exit DNR], uses special worms in a bin to break down your food waste into soil.
Recycling is good for our environment. Want to help fight climate change and preserve our environment? Continue recycling! We keep almost 2 million tons of material out of Wisconsin landfills and incinerators every year through recycling and composting. Recycling paper produces 73 percent less air pollution than using virgin materials. Recycling glass reduces mining waste by 80 percent. Recycling reduces waste, cuts air pollution and saves energy.
Recycling is also good for our economy. Providing hundreds of community-based jobs, recycling strengthens Wisconsin?s economy. By collecting or using recycled materials, finding new markets for materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, and exploring new ways to reduce waste, our recycling industry stimulates economic development and drives job creation.
Have you cleaned out your garage and basement lately? There's a certain satisfaction to recycling things that you don't use anymore but others may use and enjoy....you’ll also be saving the environment by not contributing to the landfill. You can also consider donating any new and used surplus building-related materials to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Some of the materials are used directly in the construction of Habitat homes, but most are offered to the general public for purchase at reduced prices. The Habitat ReStore [exit DNR] diverts thousands of tons of usable materials from the local landfill every year.
