Waste Management Engineer

Duties

Review physical data, information and reports to assess conformance with landfill criteria. Consult with staff, consultants, and site owners. Compare site information with EPA criteria and review plan submittals. For positions that include hazardous waste duties, assess hazardous waste transportation, storage, treatment, and disposal practices. Develop an understanding of regulations in order to implement, enforce, and interpret the waste management program. Review engineering plans submitted for proposed or closed solid waste processing and disposal facilities, and new and existing hazardous waste management facilities and sites undergoing remediation. Provide technical assistance to site owners and operators. Conduct investigations at facilities. Develop technical guidelines.

Required Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Landfill design; leachate quantity; solid waste management concepts; plan review and report writing; waste management facility design and operation; general chemistry; industrial operations.

Desired Training

Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering (or some combination of the three) from an ABET-accredited program with course work or experience in waste management or a verified equivalent. (A chemical engineering degree or equivalent training is desirable for waste management positions.)
