Dioxin - A Harmful Open Burning Pollutant
What is Dioxin?
Dioxin is the name generally given to a whole class of chemicals: dioxins,
furans, and pcbs. Dioxin is a colorless solid, with no known odor. There
are 75 different dioxins, 7 of which are considered highly toxic.
The most toxic form is called 2,3,7,8 TCDD, which is not intentionally
manufactured but created as an unwanted by product during processes that
invilve chlorine, heat and organic matter.
Dioxin Facts
- There is no known use for dioxins.
- Dioxin is slow to break down and can last centuries.
- Animals consume dioxin contaminated water and plants and then it
accumulates in their fat.
- People are exposed to dioxin through eating food high in fat, like
dairy products and beef.
- Dioxin can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy
and nursing.
Dioxin Effects on Human Health
- Causes cancer.
- Affects the immune system.
- Affects reproduction. Dioxin has been associated with endometriosis, ovarian dysfunction, reduced
sperm count, and decreased testis size.
- Interferes with the endocrine gland system which produces hormones. Hormones regulate the functions of many organs and influence sexual development and fertility.
