What are the Costs of
PBTs?
The
Risks and Cost to Tourism and Recreation
Wisconsin, with its abundant rivers and lakes, has a
rich tradition of outdoor recreation. Fishing is not only a very
popular pastime, it is important to the state’s economy as well.
Over 1.8 million people fish from Wisconsin’s waters each year.
Approximately 1 million resident and 0.5 million non-resident fishing
licenses are sold each year. These anglers account for almost 1.1
billion dollars in expenditures with a total economic impact of
over 2.1 billion dollars statewide. Increased
concentrations of PBTs and the subsequent fish and wildlife consumption
advisories have the potential to limit recreational opportunities
and fish and wildlife consumption in Wisconsin. This limitation
may, in turn, have a negative impact on the state’s economy.
