State Fish Hatchery Facilities and Rearing Stations

Tours are often conducted for school groups, scouts and other groups by appointment. For everyone's safety and the health of the fish, please keep your children under control at all times. Running alongside the raceways and throwing things into the water are prohibited. Your cooperation will ensure that everyone has a nice visit.

Art Oehmcke Hatchery

  • Species: Muskellunge, walleye, lake trout and suckers
  • Operations: Hatching and rearing
  • Location: On County Highway J, 2 miles east of Woodruff, Oneida County

Les Voigt Hatchery

  • Species: Brook, brown and lake trout, steelhead, splake; Coho and chinook salmon

  • Location: On Highway 13, between Washburn and Bayfield, Bayfield County

Black River Falls Fish Propagation / Rearing Station

  • Species: Muskellunge, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleyes
  • Operations: Primarily rearing and stocking; limited hatching facilities. This station produces all of the large and smallmouth bass for DNR stocking purposes in Wisconsin.
  • Location: Office is located at the Black River Falls DNR Service Center, 910 Highway 54 East, Black River Falls near the junction of Highway 54 and I90/94.

Brule Rearing Station

  • Species: Brook, brown and rainbow trout; Steelhead
  • Opeations: Rearing and spawning
  • Location: On Hatchery Road off of Highway 27, south of Brule, Douglas County
  • Visitor Center with fish and wildlife display, and live fish display

  • Hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday - Friday throughout the year, seven days a week June through September, no holidays or weekends after September 30

Governor Tommy G. Thompson Hatchery

  • Species: Muskellunge, walleye, northern pike and suckers
  • Operations: Hatching and rearing
  • Location: West side of Spooner on south side of Highway 70, across from DNR Northern Regional Headquarters, Washburn County
  • Visitor Center with live fish display open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays year around and on weekends during the spring.

  • Hours: 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Seasonal operation, no fish raised on premises during winter months. Visitor Center open all year.

Kettle Moraine Springs Hatchery

  • Species: Chinook and coho salmon; Arlee rainbow and kamloop strains of trout
  • Operations: Hatching and rearing
  • Location: Take Highway 28 north from Batavia, turn left (west) on Cherry Hill Road to Trout Spring Road, turn right. Or take Highway 28 southwest from Cascade to County Highway S, continue on S to Trout Spring Road, turn left, Sheboygan County
