Aerial insecticide applications to control forest tent caterpillars

The forest tent caterpillar is native to Wisconsin. There are many natural enemies of forest tent caterpillars in Wisconsin to eventually end the outbreaks. Although repeated defoliation may cause some mortality to the trees, the survival of the forest is not threatened by this insect. However, for some landowners, such as resort owners, aerial applications of an insecticide to control forest tent caterpillars may be an option to consider. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has developed an information packet for the landowners who may be interested in aerial insecticide applications to control forest tent caterpillars. The packet includes step-by-step spray operation procedures, a list of aerial applicators/private consultants, regulations about pesticide use, and so on. If you are interested in obtaining a packet, please contact your local DNR forester or forest health specialist
