Grants, Plans, Programs
The following grants, plans, and programs administered by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) can be used as tools to help implement your goals, objectives, and policies. A short description of how each of these tools can be used to support the implementation of your comprehensive plan is included following the link that directs you to more information on that specific tool.
GRANT
EXISTING PLANS
- Statewide Forest Plan
http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/assessment
The Statewide Forest Plan is completed and is available online. An assessment of Wisconsin's forests highlighted several trends and issues. Planners can ensure that issues specific to their community are addressed.
- State Forest Master Plans
http://dnr.wi.gov/master_planning/
Every property belonging to the Department of Natural Resources is required to have a master plan. Planners can review these plans for guidance on how to plan for their forests and ensure public involvement.
- County Forest Plans
http://www.wisconsincountyforests.com/
Under the County Forest Law, Wisconsin counties are required to develop comprehensive county forest land use plans for a 10-year period. These plans can be reviewed to ensure that the current and future issues to the county's forests are being addressed when it is time to update them.
- Urban Forest Technical Assistance

The Urban Forestry Program at the Department of Natural Resources can offer technical assistance to aid communities in developing management plans, inventories, ordinances, plant health care, and training plans.
VOLUNTARY PROGRAMS
- The Managed Forest Law
http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/ftax/
The Managed Forest Law is directed to private forest landowners that manage their forests for timber harvest. Enrollment into this program offers reduced property tax payments. Planners can incorporate similar incentive-based programs to support the goals and objectives of their comprehensive plans.
- Forest Legacy
http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/legacy/overview.html
The Forest Legacy Program designates Forest Legacy Areas that are in danger of being converted into other uses. By entering into the program, an easement is placed on the property rights of the land in order to ensure that the forest will be protected into the future. If Forest Legacy Areas have been designated in your community, you can also consider preserving surrounding forestland to maintain forest connectivity.
- Land Legacy
http://dnr.wi.gov/master_planning/land_legacy/
The Department of Natural Resources, as directed by the Natural Resources Board, identified places in Wisconsin that are important for conservation and recreation after discussion with the public and DNR staff. The Land Legacy Report can be used as a resource to catalyze action for protection of the identified priority protection areas in your community.
