News & InfoA Big 100th Birthday GiftThe Brule River State Forest has received a big 100th birthday gift, big as in close to 6,000 acres big. Thanks to the collaboration of the Conservation Fund and Wausau Paper Mills, Warren Knowles-Gaylord Nelson Stewardship Fund, a total of 5,889.13 acres of property [PDF, 444KB] have been added to the Brule River State Forest, bringing the total property acres close to 47,000 acres. This was an important land acquisition because this land will now be left undeveloped for public use without the possibility of it becoming fragmented in the future. To commemorate this event Governor Jim Doyle made an appearance at the Brule DNR office Wednesday, June 27th to announce this and other land purchases across the state which totaled over 10,000 acres. To protect our parks and forests from firewood hitch hikers, the Wisconsin DNR has created a permanent rule which prohibits bringing firewood onto any DNR property from more than 50 miles away or from outside of Wisconsin. Last Revised: Wednesday June 25 2008
