Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest
Beginning in July, naturalist programming on the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest will be reduced due to limitations of the State Budget. Public programs at the Crystal Lake Nature Center will be limited to a few "as announced" events for the balance of the camping season.

The Spirit of the Northwoods
Crystal Lake Nature Center, Saturday, August 15, 2009 6 - 7 PM
The Spirit of the Northwoods portrays colorful, sometimes tragic, faces of our Northwoods heritage. Explore struggles and triumphs of turn-of-the-century family life in Northern Wisconsin. This program reveals living history, lumber camp stories, ( and a few family secrets ).
Fifth generation Northwoods native Bob Dall enjoys sharing family stories. The “Spirit” has visited nature centers and gatherings of folk throughout the Midwest. In his other life, Bob works in forestry master planning with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Loon — Symbol of the North
Crystal Lake Nature Center, Saturday, August 22, 2009 6 - 7 PM
The Common Loon has a lot of uncommon characteristics. For over thirty years, Loon Watch has been researching loons and the lakes they live on. At this presentation, you will learn about loons, their calls, their ecology, and hear stories that teach us how to protect them. Great program for adults and kids alike — with time for your questions.
Presented by Stacy Craig, LoonWatch Coordinator. LoonWatch, a program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute of Northland College, was formed in 1978. LoonWatch works to protect the Common Loon and its aquatic habit through education, population monitoring, and research.
Programs are free and open to the public. However, a State Park Sticker is required on your vehicle for those programs located within the campgrounds. Children 10 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult. For programs requiring pre-registration, you must do so by noon on the day prior to the program.
