Wisconsin's Forestry Best Management Practices for Water Quality Field Manual lists over 118 BMPs for forestry activities including road building, timber harvesting, prescribed burning and the application of chemicals.

Forest Management Guidelines

Wisconsin Forest Management Guidelines (FMG) outlines practical, site-specific considerations that land managers need to take into account when they plan and carry out forestry operations. The FMG covers sustainable forest management principles that can serve recreation, wildlife habitat improvement, endangered species protection, water quality, forest products and many other objectives.

Forest Management Practices: Managing Water Series

The Managing Water Series provides guidance on the planning, construction, and maintenance of forest roads, trails, landing, and stream and wetland crossing. The goals of this series are to limit erosion, help meet landowner objectives, improve safety, and reduce costs.

Forest Management Practices: Crossing Options Series

Timber harvesting and hauling equipment can damage water quality by stirring up sediment, harming fish and other aquatic organisms, if stream crossings are not properly designed, installed, and maintained. The Crossing Options Series provides guidance on special stream crossing options that can minimize the impact to water quality and fish habitat. A Landowner's Guide to Building Forest Access Roads

This guide covers basic planning, construction, drainage, maintenance, and closure of low-speed forest roads with a 12-foot-wide running surface that are needed only temporarily or only during certain times of the year. The recommendations incorporate best management practices, which are designed to reduce nonpoint-source pollution during road building.
