DNR Land Certification

In January 2009, one million acres of state-owned land received recognition as being responsibly managed by both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). That brings the number of certified state-owned lands to 1.5 million acres, a threefold increase. The certification adds state parks, wildlife areas, and natural areas to the 10 state forests that were first endorsed in 2004. The Forest Stewardship Council [exit DNR] and the Sustainable Forest Initiative [exit DNR] are nonprofit organizations devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests.

Forest Certification Audit at Perrot State Park Tripling the scope of forest certification from state forests to all DNR-managed lands emphasizes the state’s commitment to responsible management for a host of ecosystem and economic benefits. Management of multi-use lands involves balancing the goals of conserving forestland, supporting economic activities, protecting wildlife habitat, and providing recreational opportunities.
Forest certification does not imply these lands will be managed more intensively for commercial forest products. DNR Land Division Administrator Laurie Osterndorf observes, “Achieving certification of Wisconsin DNR lands is only a beginning. Certification requires continual improvement on property master plans, habitat for diverse wildlife, facilities management, public involvement, and other work of great importance to all Wisconsin citizens. Forest certification audits help to assure focus on these important tasks."
