Emerald Ash Borer Management Options
Despite the fact that the emerald ash borer has been present in North America since the early 1990’s, it is still a relatively new pest, especially scientifically speaking. Since its identification in 2002, the scientific community has had little time to learn all it can about this relatively widespread and highly destructive tree-killing pest. To date, there have been no scientific discoveries of a “silver bullet” for getting rid of established emerald ash borer infestations, nor do we know how to effectively manage or keep existing emerald ash borer populations in check.
However, scientists have made great strides toward a better understanding of how this exotic pest is able to prosper in North America. Scientific contributions cover various aspects of emerald ash borer host range, behavior, biology and ecology, survivorship under varying processed host conditions (wood chips, firewood), chemical and biological control, and distribution potential. Based on these new discoveries, some general guidelines for emerald ash borer prevention and management in both rural and urban situations have been developed.
Due to the ongoing nature of this research, guidelines will be continually modified as more promising control and management measures become apparent. Look for frequent updates to this site!
