Lepalla Road Timber Sale

Aerial view of Brule River

The Lepalla Road timber sale was completed in the spring of 2008. This timber sale was a very successful one in that it achieved goals of the Master Plan, while keeping aesthetics, water quality and ecological considerations in mind. The site was within a ¼ mile of the Brule River, but no harvesting occurred on the slopes leading to the river. Aesthetic impacts were minimized by the shape, size and location of the harvested areas. The harvest is not visible from the Brule River and may be viewed along Lepalla Road; however, this is a lightly traveled road and nearby homeowners were consulted prior to the sale.

This forest stand falls within the Lake Superior Clay Plain Native Community Management Area as listed in the Brule River State Forest Master Plan (December, 2002). The management goals within this management area are for natural communities dominated by “boreal” conifers. The harvesting plan for this forest stand followed the goals of the Master Plan. Mature aspen and jack pine were harvested to promote the regeneration of a mix of aspen, fir and spruce. Other tree species were retained.
