During summer 2009, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), along with many local partners, built an innovative new model for watercraft inspection. Using federal stimulus dollars, DWD was able to hire youth watercraft inspectors and station them at high-priority boat landings throughout the state.

Some summary statistics from the project:

49 youth from across Wisconsin inspected watercraft through this project

23 counties had youth inspectors at boat landings

2284 hours spent inspecting boats

4900 boats inspected by youth inspectors
