Hunter safety education is a Wisconsin success story. Since 1967, when the state's hunter safety program began, the hunting accident rate has fallen 90 percent. More than 818,000 students have graduated from the state's hunter education courses in the last 40 years.
The DNR supports 5,000 hunter education instructors -- the largest instructor corps in North America that teaches classes. The 2004 hunting season was the safest deer season on record, with only five hunting-related accidents. The department's goal is zero accidents.
