BRRTS on the Web Disclaimers

Data Completeness:

BRRTS on the Web is a good starting point for finding basic information about contaminated sites, but it is only a starting point. For sites under DNR jurisdiction, more detailed inquiries, or requests to review DNR files, may be directed to DNR staff via the email links within our “Activity Details” web pages, or by using the "Staff" link on our left navigation sidebar.

Sites Not in BRRTS on the Web:

Clearly, BRRTS only contains contaminated sites that DNR knows about. In addition, there are a few sites for which DNR has some limited information but no confirmation of a discharge to the environment. These potentially contaminated sites do not appear in BRRTS on the Web until contamination has been confirmed.

Data Sources:

BRRTS data comes from various sources, both internal and external to DNR. Much of our information has been received from property owners, environmental consultants and contractors. There may be omissions and errors in the data, as well as delays in updating new information.

Data Not Shown:

BRRTS on the Web shows almost every detail in our database. It does not show personally identifiable information about individuals (names, phone numbers), but business and corporate names and telephone numbers are included.

Data Quality:

We do our best to keep BRRTS on the Web up to date, but it is difficult. In particular, our contact information may not be up to date. For example, many leaking underground storage tank sites have changed ownership several times since the leak occurred, but sometimes only the original owner may be listed.

Public Land Survey System (PLSS):

We have used geographic information system (GIS) mapping to correct PLSS locations (e.g. NE quarter of SW quarter of Section X) that appear to have been incorrect. Property owners, consultants and contractors originally provided most PLSS locations to us. Due to our corrections, the PLSS locations shown in BRRTS on the Web may not match the PLSS locations found in reports in our files. We have not been able to correct the locations found under the activity type of “Spills."

For information on the Activity types and their inclusiveness, please see refer to the glossary page.
