Remediation and Redevelopment Program

The Remediation and Redevelopment (RR) Program oversees the investigation and cleanup of environmental contamination and the redevelopment of contaminated properties. Our staff provide a comprehensive, streamlined program that consolidates state and federal cleanups into one program (e.g., hazardous waste cleanup, underground storage tank investigation & cleanup, spill response, state-funded cleanups and brownfields).

The former Stokely USA site in Waunakee had been a canning facility for more than 70 years. By 1998, most of the site was abandoned and local police were routinely called in to deal with vandals. Village officials acquired the property in 2000, and received DNR Brownfield Site Assessment Grants in 2002 and 2003 to remove underground storage tanks, demolish buildings and conduct site assessments. The Village also utilized a Commerce Brownfields Grant and a DNR Stewardship grant. The 13.5 acre site was then divided into three parcels and redeveloped into the new Village Community Center, a senior housing facility and a stormwater retention basin. The blighted area, previously valued at $500,000, is now worth approximately $12 million (DNR file photos).
