How do you dispose of mercury-containing products in the home safely?
The DNR recommends that you do not dispose of any mercury-containing material in the garbage. Mercury is a hazardous material and should be handled separately from regular trash. Otherwise, it could cause adverse impact to human health or the environment.
- If the mercury is in an intact device (such as a thermometer), put the device in a sealed plastic container and take it to your local household hazardous waste collection facility.
- If the mercury is in an open device which might spill, such as a barometer, do the same but take extra care not to spill the mercury.
