Tires - Personal Vehicle

Material Description

Waste tires from personal vehicles.

Environmental Impacts

Rainwater accumulates in tire piles creating an ideal environment for mosquitoes that are known to transmit LaCrosse Encephalitis and West Nile Virus. Another hazard is fire.

Too Valuable to Waste

Waste tires can be used to produce energy, in geotechnical applications, and the rubber can be reused in a variety of products.

Legal Requirements

Under chapter 287.07(3)(j), Wis, Stat., it is illegal to dispose of tires in a solid waste landfill.

Preferred Handling Option: Recycle!

  • As an owner of a personal vehicle, the best way to deal with your old tires is to take advantage of the service provided by the establishment where you buy your new tires. Almost all new tire dealers will take those old tires for a service fee.
  • If you have a small amount of waste tires that have accumulated in your garage and need to find a tire recycler to pick them up:
    • Find a licensed tire handler (PDF, 159K) in your county; or
    • Very few municipalities provide collection services for tires. You can contact your local recycling program to see if your county provides for collection.
