Wisconsin Green & Healthy Schools Program Assessment

This Assessment is designed to help your school identify what types of healthy, safe, and environmentally sound activities are already in place and where your school can improve its efforts.

You must do at least five sections of the Assessment to complete the Discovery and Inventory step. The energy, waste & recycling, and water sections must be done along with any two of the remaining sections.

NOTE: This is a self assessment for your school to use, it does not need to be turned in.

There are a total of 10 sections to the Assessment. Do these three:

Energy Assessment   Energy Section
Audit [PDF 58KB], Classroom [PDF 38KB],
  Supplementary Guide [PDF 54KB]
Waste Section   Waste and Recycling Section
  [PDF 186KB]
Water Section   Water Section
  [PDF 159KB]

And, do at least two of the following:

  [PDF 129KB]

  [PDF 223KB]

Each section will have a list of questions or checklists to complete. Divide individual sections among different teachers, classes, or other school personnel to complete.

Suggestions and Tips for Completing the Assessment

  1. Have your Green & Healthy team determine how to conduct the Assessment and who will do the various sections.
  2. Complete individual room checklists first (located at the end of the energy, waste/recycling, and transportation [if selected] sections). Information from these will help in completing the remainder of the sections.
  3. Keep students involved as much as possible.
  4. Involve your maintenance staff and administrators right away. Ask the administrative and maintenance staff to help you gather important documents and information. Some documents or resources you will find useful in completing the Assessments are:
    • Past and current building and grounds plans/blueprints
    • Past and current energy bills
    • Past and current water bills
    • Waste/recycling service provider contracts and bills
    • Operation and maintenance manuals for heating and cooling systems
    • School safety plans
    • Chemical hygiene plans
    • Chemical inventory lists
    • School/district policy manuals (regarding operations of school building)
  5. Inform all school staff and students and encourage them to volunteer to help before you start working on the various sections of the assessment.

Have fun doing the assessment! This is a chance for you to learn a lot about your school. You may be surprised to find all the green and healthy practices your school is already doing and what opportunities exist for improvements.
