State Fair [exit DNR]. Visit the
DNR exhibits at this year's Wisconsin State Fair--a green oasis in the
midst of the souvenir stands, amusement rides, food stands and loud
music of the fairgrounds. Displays and demonstrations, license sales,
and people to answer your questions. Nature discovery area for kids
of all ages to enjoy. Near the southwest corner of the fairgrounds.

- Nature Storytime: Pee-yew Skunk! What's black and white
and smelled all over? A skunk! Join us as we uncover some cool truths
about skunks. This hour of nature fun awaits 3-to 6-year- olds with

- Venture Into the Night Hike: Birds of the Night. As the
sun sets and the light fades from the sky, the day animals retire
and a new group of animals awakens. We will explore the world of
the crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) and nocturnal (active
at night) animals. Bring your insect repellent and sense of adventure.

how the world looks to an ant? Equipped with magnifiers, we'll see

- Drop In at the Beach: Outdoor Cooking. Brush up on your
outdoor cooking skills or learn a new technique. The naturalists
will be baking cakes, toasting pudgy pies, and whipping up some
other tasty treats. You'll be surprised at how easy cooking in the
outdoors can be. We'll also cover fire building and safety. Everyone
is invited to drop in for a few minutes or more than an hour for
some nature fun. Adults are encouraged to participate with their
children. Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Beach. 1-4 p.m.
- Wisconsin Outdoor Hazards. Beware! Prepare! Many hazards
can be found in the great outdoors of Wisconsin. Jackie Scharfenberg,
forest naturalist, will tell about the more common outdoor hazards
and how to prepare yourself for sensational, safe nature adventures.
This program is best for adults and youth over the age of 8 years.

- Junior Forest Explorers: Nature's Recyclers. Nature has been
recycling for millions of years. Learn what organisms help recycle all
the dead stuff of nature. It's sure to be a creepy crawly experience.
This fun-filled program is for all 6- to 12-year-old explorers. Ice

- Potawatomi State Park, Sturgeon Bay, (920) 746-2890 or e-mail - Watercoloring Nature. Join local artist Elaine Cregan for this hands-on lesson in watercolor painting. to Kohler-Andrae are invited to join camp members as they re-enact life
as it was in the early to mid 1800s. Demonstrations and activities happen
as interest develops. Spend an hour or the entire day viewing activities

- Rock Collecting For Fun. Join Ed Mindock for a presentation on rock collecting as a hobby. A hands-on approach to beginning and understanding rock collecting and having fun doing it. All ages welcome. Sanderling Nature Center. 2 p.m.
- Wisconsin's Frogs - Sunset Serenade.
Each spring Wisconsin's frogs and toads announce their presence with
a musical choir. Learn about these amphibians without tails and the
songs they sing. Of the 12 species in Wisconsin, nine live in Sheboygan
County. Janet Raddatz will share her knowledge of these special creatures.

Eight-Legged Hunters. Web weavers, wolf spiders, and daddy longlegs
are all eight-legged animals, but they find food in very different ways.
Explore the lives of some of these hunters. Concurrent story times concurrently
for preschoolers, ages 3-5, and their parents and for primary age children,
ages 6-8. These programs are not for day care centers or organizations.

- One Wild Saturday Morning Drop-in: Web Spinners. Late summer
is a great time to look for spiders! You and your family or youth group
can drop in between 9 a.m. and noon to discover cool things about nature
through hands-on activities, experiments, crafts, games, and picture

- Exploring Nature: Fishing Fun. Experienced anglers will
share their knowledge on how to bait a hook, cast a line and reel
in fish. If you're lucky, you may even learn to clean the fish you
catch. Bring your fishing gear, if you have some. A limited number
of rods and reels will be available and bait is provided. People
over the age of 16 will need to have a valid Wisconsin fishing license
to fish. Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Fishing Pier. 9:30-11:30 a.m.

moths float through the night. You will be amazed at the lives these
incredible insects lead. Everyone is invited to drop in for a few

- The Joy of Nature Journals. A nature journal is a great
way to remember your outdoor experiences. From the forest naturalists,
discover some tips on keeping a journal and ways to get started.
During the last portion of the program, each participant will be
able to make his or her own hand-bound journal. To ensure plenty
of supplies, call by August 15. This program is best for adults
and youth over the age of 8 years. Ice Age Visitor Center. 7-8:30

- Kite Building Workshop. Join in the fun of making and decorating
a pocket sled kite during either of the workshop sessions, then
head right out the door to fly the kite on the beach. Best for children
12 and under; 4-year-olds will need parental help. $4 charge per
kite kit. Call to register for a session. Park shelter in campground.

- The Sands of Kohler-Andrae: Sand Stories, Games and Craft.
Volunteer naturalist Chris Lilek will reveal the history and source
of Kohler-Andrae State Park beach sand through stories, games and
a craft. Bring the family and prepare to get down and dirty in the
sand. No pets allowed. Beach near bath house. 3-4 p.m.
- Phoenix Lander Mars Mission. NASA Ambassador Kevin Koski
will give a presentation on the Phoenix Lander spacecraft which
landed on the northern plains of Mars in May. Kevin will explain
its mission, its finds, and new discoveries and answer questions.
Best for age 8 and over. No pets allowed. Sanderling Nature Center.

- Potawatomi State Park, Sturgeon Bay, (920) 746-2890 or e-mail - Geocaching. Learn the basics of geocaching at Potawatomi State Park. This two-hour program will begin with an introduction to geocaching followed by hands-on experience locating temporary caches. GPS units will be provided. - Lake Michigan Shipwrecks. Meet local historian Steve Radovan to hear about the discovery and identification of the Schooner Gallinipper, built in 1833 and sunk in 1851. - Outdoor Adventure: Biking Through Habitats. Hop on your bicycle
to peddle at a leisurely pace along the new bike trail between Mauthe
Lake and Dundee. As we peddle we will investigate the natural habitats
traversed by the trail. This will be about an 8-mile round trip. Provide

- Drop In at the Beach: Marvelous Mammals. What do humans
have in common with bears, bats, mice and deer? We're all mammals!
Discover what characteristics mammals share and how they're adapted

- Summer Star Gazing. Look through a telescope or binoculars
to bring into focus the wonders of the night sky. With the help
of the Northern Cross Science Foundation experienced night sky observers,
spy distant planets, dumb-bell nebulas, globular clusters and so
much more. The program will be held only if the skies are clear.
This program is best for adults and children over the age of 8 years.

- Bats and Humans Need Each Other. Bats are among the best
friends we humans ever had. Janet Raddatz will share her knowledge
of these special creatures. Following the presentation, join Janet

that will translate inaudible high-frequency bat sounds into humanly
audible clicks & chirps. This presentation is for the entire

about native wildflowers and grasses on this remnant of railroad prairie.
