Gypsy Moth Suppression Program
(ss. 26.30(2) and (5), 28.01, and 28.07, Wis. Stats.; s. NR 47.9, Wis. Admin. Code)
| These grants are provided to reduce
outbreaks of gypsy moth species populations below the level
at which they can cause heavy defoliation. Federal cost-sharing
is provided by the U.S. Forest Service. Landowners may request
their counties participate in the voluntary Gypsy Moth Suppression
Program. Counties are eligible to apply for grants to fund their
participation in the Program, provided they have designated a local |
 |
| coordinator. Tribal, federal and state lands apply through their county's program, like all other landowners or communities in the county would do. The suppression
program consists of an aerial insecticide treatment administered
in partnership with the WI Department of Agriculture, Trade
and Consumer Protection. Landowners within the proposed block
that object to treatment may have their property excluded from
the spray block. |
Expenses directly relevant to the suppression program, aerial spray,
and administrative costs, will be cost-shared based on the amount
of funding received from the US Forest Service at the following
rates:
- Privately owned lands under 500 acres per owner may be cost-shared up to 50 percent
- Privately owned lands of over 500 acres per owner may be cost-shared up to 33 percent
- Publicly owned lands may be cost shared up to 25 percent
Eligible treatment blocks must meet the following criteria:
- Be of at least 20 contiguous acres in a compact and regular
shape.
- Have canopy coverage of 50 percent or more.
- 50 percent or more of the canopy must be of the insect's preferred
hosts listed in the Grant Application Instructions.
- Have the following minimum average number of egg masses per
acre as estimated by survey methods described in the application
materials:
- 500 egg masses per acre on residential or high use, public
recreational land.
- 1000 egg masses per acre on rural land.
Applications are due December 1. Expense worksheets are due January 7 and July 15. Log sheets, payments for total cost of aerial spray, and telephone contacts are due April 1.
