Public Safety - DNR distributes hunter safety public service announcements

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is rolling out two new public service announcements (PSAs) to state radio and television stations. The PSAs urge hunters to keep the tradition of hunting safe and enjoyable by seeking permission from property owners before they hunt and following safe hunting practices. DNR hopes the PSAs will begin airing statewide in early November. (read full news release)

Enforcement - Investigation leads to charges for illegal fish poaching and sales

MILWAUKEE,Wis. – two and a half year investigation that included undercover work and search warrants resulted in criminal charges against five Milwaukee residents. Potential jail sentences range from six to fifteen months and fines could total more than $27,000. In addition, the defendants face a total of more than 60 years of license revocations for poaching and the illegal sale of blue gills, crappies, bass and other pan and game fish from Wisconsin lakes. Finally, the law provides for the court to impose a wild-animal protection surcharge, which in this case could add over $18,000 to the total. (read full news release)

Community Wardening - Youth bear hunt a success

RUSK COUNTY, Wis. – Two young hunters were selected by The Safe Hunters of Tomorrow board from a group of 27 recent hunter education graduates to participate in a youth bear hunt. A boy and a girl were selected to participate in the hunt. The young hunters were given their choice to hunt with hounds or sit over bait; both chose to hunt using hounds.(read full story)
