Public Attitude Research Barriers & Incentives to Alternative Stormwater Management
Overview
Residential and commercial developments create surfaces that are impervious to rainwater. This often results in increased stormwater runoff and decreased infiltration and groundwater recharge. Our research examines the barriers and incentives to alternative development practices that enhance the infiltration of stormwater. These include such practices as grassy swales, infiltration basins, and rain gardens.
Methods
This study relies on case studies of selected areas where such practices have actually been implemented or will be implemented in the near future. We are conducting in-depth personal interviews with landowners, developers, builders, local municipal officials, engineers, and others involved in various aspects of development.
Status
We conducted a series of in-depth interviews with a range of factors involved in decisions that affect the adoption of these practices. Further interviews are currently underway. We anticipate completing a draft report by 2002-2003.
