Current Conditions at Nelson Dewey State ParkConditions as of Thursday, October 15, 2009: Fall has begun at Nelson Dewey State Park. The leaves have not turned on many trees yet, but each day colors a few more leaves as we get closer to peak. EventsHalloween at Stonefield Historic Site - October 24, 2009 TrailsCome and enjoy the fall colors on our trails, or enjoy the great views of the Mississippi River valley from our multiple overlooks. All of Nelson Dewey's trails are open and in great shape. The overlook on the Woodbine Nature Trail has been freshly cleared, and the views are terrific. New interpretive signs have also been installed along the 0.3 mile paved loop of the Woodbine Nature Trail. CampingThe Family campground is open, but we are no longer taking reservations for this year. All 41 regular family campsites, and the 4 walk-to campsites that are set on the 500 foot bluff overlooking the Mississippi River are now available on a first come - first served basis. The Group campground is closed for the season. If the office is not staffed, campers can self-register using the box at the park office. Water is turned off for the season. The only running water in the park is the winterized spigot outside the office. This water will remain available throughout the winter. Several vault toilets are located throughout the rest of the park. Firewood is available in the village of Cassville, 2 miles from the park. Any firewood brought in from more than 50 miles away or from a quarantined area [PDF, 102KB] or from out of state will be confiscated due to the potential of carrying harmful emerald ash borers [exit DNR]. Crawford and Vernon counties are both quarantined areas. You may reserve a campsite for dates May 1, 2010, through 11 months from today. .
