New Glarus Woods State Park Conditions

Conditions as of Tuesday, November 3, 2009:

Trails

Although the trails are not groomed after a snowfall, they provide fantastic experiences for skiers and snowshoers who like the challenge of backcountry skiing and shoeing.

Pets are permitted on the trails provided they are on a leash 8 feet or shorter, and the owners pickup after them.

Snowmobiling is not permitted in the park. The Badger and Sugar River state trails are open to snowmobiling when conditions permit.

Nature

Hikers can observe winter wildlife such as deer, squirrels, turkey and variety of songbirds and woodpeckers.

During the winter months it is not uncommon for visitors to hear the hooting of resident barred and great horned owls and the whistling whiney of the screech owl during early morning and late afternoon hikes.

Camping

Camping is available on a limited basis. Staff keep a few family campsites plowed for visitors to access during the winter. Campers can make reservations for 2010 through the reservation system by calling 1-888-947-2757 or online.

Vault toilets are available year-round. Drinking water supplies have been closed and winterized. Park visitors can acquire water supplies in New Glarus.

Firewood is available for sale from park staff and Friends group members or from vendors outside the park.

Note: Any firewood brought in from more than 50 miles away or from a quarantined area [PDF, 102KB] or from out of state will be confiscated due to the potential of carrying harmful emerald ash borers [exit DNR].

Hunting

During fall and winter, parts of New Glarus Woods State Park are open for deer hunting.
