Weddings in the Park

Many couples have found Peninsula State Park a great place to say their wedding vows. Before you decide whether to have a wedding in the park, many questions arise. The following planning guidelines may help you decide:

Peninsula State Park allows weddings that are small, quiet, and do not disrupt the enjoyment of the park by others. Vehicle parking is always a concern that needs to be addressed. Is shuttling of guests necessary?

There are several places where a small ceremony may take place. The couple should plan on spending some time in the park before making arrangements. When a location and time is determined, consult with the park superintendent to ensure compatibility of the site to the size and nature of the ceremony.

Unless one of the two enclosed shelters are rented, there are no fees other than the park vehicle sticker requirement.

Larger “traditional” wedding receptions normally are not permitted, as the park has no sites that adequately accommodate such gatherings and music is not allowed. Small receptions that do not involve music may be held in one of the park's two enclosed shelters (50 persons maximum).

Tents, in some cases, are permitted, depending on the location. All couples should be prepared for the possibility of rain.

Some Sites at Peninsula Where Weddings Have Been Held

Weborg Point has an enclosed 50-person shelter that can be rented for $100. Small ceremonies may be held on the grassy area near the shore. There are fewer than 10 parking spaces, so shuttling of guests is necessary. Any loud music would disturb the neighboring campground, so gatherings must be low key and quiet. Flush toilets are available mid-May to mid-October.

Eagle Bluff Lighthouse: Small, outdoor ceremonies may be held on the grounds during times when lighthouse tours are not being conducted, normally after 4:30 p.m. There are about 20 parking spaces. No electricity is available, and only vault toilets are provided.

Welckers Point is a beautiful picnic area on the bay with a rentable ($70) enclosed shelter that accommodates up to 50 people. Parking is limited to fewer than 20 cars, and only vault toilets are available. The shelter has only low voltage lights and no reliable electrical system.

Sven’s Bluff is a dramatic blacktop overlook with westerly views of the islands and the distant Michigan shoreline. No facilities are provided, but a brief, small ceremony could be accommodated without hindering access by other park users. There are fewer than five parking spaces and no facilities.

Eagle Panorama is another dramatic overlook with views of the park and distant islands. Small ceremonies (fewer than 20 guests) have been conducted successfully here, though the area will likely be shared by other park visitors enjoying the view. There are fewer than 10 parking spaces and no facilities.

Eagle Terrace is a dramatic overlook, with views of the Village of Ephraim and the northern Door County peninsula. The adjacent picnic area will accommodate a small tent and up to 25 cars; however, guests must climb steep stairs to get to the “terrace.” Vault toilets are a short distance away.
