Shelter

Enclosed shelter amid snow and trees

The shelter is enclosed for year-round use.

The interior is finished with locally milled eastern white cedar siding. Two sliding glass doors on the Lake Michigan side of the building allow a view of the water and towering cedars. Two casement windows on the north side of the building allow cooling cross ventilation and a view of the trees and trail bordering the picnic area.

A large fieldstone fireplace is the focal point of the enclosed portion of the shelter.

Fire in fireplace

The fireplace mimics the style of the one in the original park shelter building.

The shelter is used for year-round naturalist programs and as a warming shelter during the ski season, and is rented to groups through the park shelter reservation system. Groups cannot reserve the shelter during ski season.

Carry In/Carry Out
