Youth Deer Hunter

Megan Mader

The 2009 Wisconsin Whitetail Youth Hunt proved to be an exciting and successful weekend for Megan Mader, age 13, of Fifield, Wisconsin. The hunt was a family hunt: father and daughter hunted one stand and mom and Megan hunted another. The only downside was Megan didn’t get to sit for more than an hour in her stand. By 6am, she was set up in her deer stand with her mother on the opening morning. With fresh snow on the ground and cooler temperatures, the conditions were excellent for a chance at a nice deer. Shortly after daylight Megan could hear rustling in the tall grass and several minutes later she could see a large lone deer walk into to her shooting lane giving her a nice broadside shot with her .308. Upon firing, the buck lurched forward into the tall grass and out of sight. After hearing Megan shoot the whole family came to help find the deer and celebrate with Megan. It was a great moment when Megan and Grandpa approached the area where she shot and found her buck laying only 10 yards away! Congratulations to Megan on bagging her 9 point trophy with a 15” spread.
