Underground Injection Well InformationThe Underground Injection Control (UIC) program is a requirement of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974. The purpose of the UIC program is to protect underground sources of drinking water (a.k.a. groundwater) from contamination that may result from the use of injection wells. Each state is required to establish a UIC regulatory program that enforces rules that are at least as stringent as those published in the Code of Federal Regulations. Any state that fails to establish its own UIC program will be subject to the direct enforcement of federal injection well regulations by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The State of Wisconsin has had primary enforcement authority for its UIC program since 1983. DNR has been designated as the lead state agency responsible for the administration of the UIC program. DNR’s Bureau of Drinking Water and Groundwater coordinates UIC-related regulatory activities. |
