Dam Removal and Channel Restoration on the North Branch Oconto River

In 2004 work began to remove the Hemlock and Knowles Dams and restore the channel North Branch Oconto River in Oconto County to improve fish habitat. This three year project is nearing completion and will improve living conditions on approximately 5 to 10 miles of this fairly large stream for native brook trout. The dam previously impounded 1.7 miles of stream and its removal will also improve downstream water temperatures. The project was a team effort lead by Cliff Sebero, Peshtigo Office, with important contributions from the NER Operations Wild Rose staff and US Forest Service biologists. This project was partially funded by inland Trout Stamp monies and it received the “Rise to the Future” award from the US Forest Service in December 2004.
