Shoreland Stewardship Awards

We’ve started a new program to reward waterfront property owners who keep
Wisconsin lakes and rivers clean, healthy and beautiful by maintaining a
natural, low maintenance landscape or by restoring their shoreline.
Award winners selected through a site evaluation get a certificate
[certificate pdf 212kb] recognizing
their exemplary care, expert advice on stabilizing eroding shorelines, reducing
chemical use and other additional measures to improve their property, and potential
increases in property values. A similar awards program in Maine has seen
participating property owners enjoy a substantial increase in their property values.
Before Restoration ------------------> After Restoration
How can you receive a Waterfront Stewardship Award?
Simply download and print the rating criteria (pdf 127kb). Answer the
questions and send the completed form to the address listed, along with a couple of
pictures of your property. We’ll send you a letter acknowledging we received your
package, and will notify you early in the year whether you have won the award. It’s
that simple.
How Does the Waterfront stewardship award Evaluation Process Work?
The Waterfront Stewardship Award evaluation process involves a site visit by a DNR
Water Management Specialist or other qualified expert. During the visit, the
evaluator will ask you questions about your property. If for some reason you can
not be present during the evaluation you can fill out the pre-evaluation
questionnaire and return it to the DNR at:
P.O. Box 7921, Madison, WI, 53707-7921
along with a note granting permission to be on the property. Next the evaluator
will visit the property and review landscape and management practices in the
five following categories:
- Hard surfaces such as roads, driveways, and rooftops
- Structures and Septic System
- Lawn and Recreation Areas
- Shoreline Area
